STEP 1: Choose an objective to investigate and master.
STEP 2: Using Schoology, choose activities to complete that are based on the information in this objective. You could also access the Study Center on MasonPS.com for additional simulations, videos and other resources. You could work in small groups or one-on-one with your teacher to work towards mastery of your chosen objective. Your teacher will have class lessons prepared weekly to help you work towards mastery of objectives.
STEP 3: Time to demonstrate mastery! You have two different options here: Option #1: Complete a traditional assessment on Schoology. If you choose this option, you will need to provide evidence for your preparation. You could share the different activities you completed or take notes using the many resources available to you. When you are ready, show this evidence to your teacher. Your teacher will ask you questions to be sure you are ready. When you are, then you will be given access to the assessment.
Option #2: Demonstrate mastery in an alternative way. This option is limitless! On the Schoology main page for Physical Science, you can access a Mastery Menu and Tools that give lots of different options for demonstrating mastery. These can include drawings, songs, blogs, creative writing, videos, coding, etc. There are so many ideas! If you choose this option, you must go beyond just “taking notes” - this needs to be a creative method for showing what you know and it must include all parts of the objective. When you believe this is ready for submission, go to Schoology, choose the unit of study and click on Mastery Submissions. Here you will submit your demonstration of mastery. Your teacher will then look over this submission and give you some feedback. If it does not include all parts of the objective or something is inaccurate, your teacher will make a comment and mark your submission as incomplete. You should then go into the assignment and comment back to your teacher. This feedback will continue until you have demonstrated mastery.
FAQ: What if I don’t demonstrate mastery on my assessment? Good question! You can create another form of demonstrating your knowledge of the objective - whiteboarding, videos, etc. Check out the Mastery Menu for ideas! Submit your mastery following STEP 3: Option #2. You will then meet with your teacher one-on-one to discuss the objective and be sure you know your stuff.
What if I don’t demonstrate mastery on my mastery submission? That’s ok! Your teacher will give you feedback, make comments, etc. that you can then respond to. Together, you will find a way to demonstrate mastery.
I noticed my mastery submission is marked incomplete in Schoology. Why?When your teacher marks your mastery submission incomplete it means that there is some aspect of the objective missing or there is a question (or questions) that need to be answered about your submission. Click on your assignment submission and check the comments! What if I’m struggling and I don’t feel ready to demonstrate mastery using either option? Seek help! You have a teacher, other learners, and tons of resources available to you. Your teacher is always prepared to help you understand objectives and find a method that works for you!
